On October 12, LUISS University will host the first “Smart Cities Roadshow“,
organized by Formiche and Agol, in collaboration with the National Agency for
Youths, as well as several universities, institutions and firms.
These partners will work together to help young students to become the next
generation of leaders; they will teach students to be smarter and more
intelligent citizens of the community.
These are challenges that we can only overcome together through collective awareness
and strong participation. The day will begin at 9:30 am, and Professor Christian Iaione
will be one of the distinguished guests, along with Giampiero Gallo (Economic Advisor
to the Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and a professor at the University of Florence),
Simona Vicari (State Secretary at the Ministry of Economic Development with
responsibility for Smart City and President of the Task Force of the Ministry on
Smart Cities), Andrea Costa (project manager of EXPO 2015 Telecom Italia),
Laura Bononcini (Head of Public Policy at Facebook Italy) and many others.
In the afternoon the group will engage in stimulating co-design activities, where
students can consult with experts in the field. The round-tables will be organized
with policy makers, enterprises and experts to discuss a possible national policy
on the development of smart collaborative cities.
These activities will be featured by experts of the various branches: Ilaria Potito
(Head of Working Capital Operations at Telecom Italian), Mauro Annunziato
(Smart City and Coordinator of Eco enterprise ENEA) and Ugo Barbara (Head
New Media editors AGI).The event will end at 17:30.

#OrtoLUISS AS A SYMBOL OF INNOVATION, COLLABORATION AND FRIENDSHIP
The main event of this year in Italy is the #Expo. Expo Milano 2015 is the Universal Exhibition that Milan, Italy, is hosting from May 1 to October 31, 2015. Over this six-month period, Milan becomes a global showcase where more than 140 participating countries show the best of their technology that offers a concrete answer to a vital need: being able to guarantee healthy, safe and sufficient food for everyone, while respecting the Planet and its equilibrium. In addition to the exhibitor nations, the Expo also involves international organizations, and expects to welcome over 20 million visitors to its 1.1 million square meters of exhibition area[1]. On the 16th of September, LabGov was invited to the Cluster BIO – Piazzetta Mediterranea, during the Settimana della Dieta mediterranea / UNESCO in EXPO.
At this Conference, LabGov presented the importance of #OrtoLUISS in the context of sustainability and collaboration. There, the moderator gave the floor to LUISS General Director Lo Storto, who explained how important the project was to him personally and to the LUISS community as a whole. Claudia Giommarini followed Lo Storto and deepened the aim of the project #OrtoLUISS. She explained that the garden is a place for LUISS students and staff to convene, collaborate, and connect to nature. Then, the moderator introduced Professor Iaione – coordinator of LabGov. He illustrated the importance of public goods managed with the collaborative governance.
The two LabGovers started to describe their experience. Benedetta Borghini explained what LabGov is and how LabGov works, including its aim, organization, elements and projects CO-Battipaglia, CO-Bologna, CO-Mantova etc. Then, Benedetta Gillio discussed the experience in #OrtoLUISS, which she defined as a “school of civilization“ where she learned a sense of respect, the meaning of the words care and patience, and the importance of collaboration. Both speeches focused on how such experiments in collaborative governance are both significant and functional experiences. Completing the explanations, Benedetta introduced the new LUISS LabGov Educational Lab 2015-16, which will aim to provide an effective governance tool for Rome.
The Journalist and writer Gianluca Nicoletti, who is also the president of the Onlus Insettopia, stressed that #OrtoLUISS has unique implications for children with autism because it can help them connect to the world through ortoterapia. As a first mover, LUISS will be the leader of such initiatives. There was also Peppe Zullo, who is the ambassador of the #OrtoLUISS and who focused on the importance of the earth and healthy food. Finally Massimo Egidi, the Rector of University, spoke about the varieties of flowers and how much we can learn from them.
Beyond the conference itself, the two LabGovers had the opportunity to explore the greater Expo pavilions, and reported that they felt an overpowering emotion, as though they could feel the power of human potential when the world is united as one. The main street at the Expo contained a series of awe-inspiring buildings, each representing a country, one next to the other. It was an amazing sensation to see those buildings, symbols of the world’s cooperation.

LabGov presents #OrtoLUISS to #EXPO!
#OrtoLUISS AS SYMBOL OF INNOVATION, COOPERATION AND FRIENDSHIP.
The most important event of this year is definitely # EXPO2015. On 16 September, LabGov has been invited to BIO Cluster – in Piazzetta Mediterranean , during the week of the Diet Mediterranean / UNESCO in EXPO . At this conference , LabGov has presented the ‘ importance of #OrtoLUISS in a context of sustainability and collaboration .

The fourth edition of LUISS LabGov Educational Lab (workshops, co-design sessions and fieldwork) will re-start on October 2nd, 2015! The meeting will be held in Viale Romania, 32 – 00198 Rome at 4.00 PM.
After focusing on Bologna, Mantua and Battipaglia, the new Edu Lab will a
ddress Rome, its potentials and weaknesses at a very difficult time for the city, its institutions, and its society. The Laboratory will aim to design a Commons-based collaborative governance tool tailored to the needs and characteristics of the Italian Capital City. As we have done until now, we will apply the CO-Cities approach, based on a strong partnership between institutions, the private sector and the community. The five souls of the collaborative governance (social innovation, public authorities, schools/universities, businesses, organized civil society) will work together to re-design their own city, making it more economically sustainable.
The CO-Cities approach requires opening experimentation grounds. LabGov 2015/2016, together with many partners representing CO-Rome, will open and manage several urban cooperation grounds in different areas of the City: The Lab will focus on Garbatella neighborhood, the Appia Antica Park, a high school in Ostia and the V Municipality (Prenestino-Centocelle). They represent four different types of urban commons to regenerate and invest in. The Lab will take this long, but very stimulating journey in the City with many allies, partners and friends who will provide insightful advice to prototype a Commons-based collaborative governance for Rome. The Laboratory stays open to contributions, help and advice. Collaboration will run Rome as a Commons, because Commons need appropriate governance tools.

Dopo i grandi risultati ottenuti a Bologna, mantova e Battipaglia, il nuovo LABoratorio per la GOVernance dei beni comuni riprenderà le sue attività concentrandosi sulla Città Eterna: Roma. Anche in questo caso, le 5 anime della governance collaborativa (social innovation, istituzioni, Università , imprese e società civile) collaboreranno per RIcostruire Roma, rendendola più vivibile e sostenibile.

We are honored to announce you that the 1st IASC (International Association for the Study of the Commons) Thematic Conference on urban commons is coming. The IASC Conference, named “ The City as a Commons: Reconceiving Urban Space, Common Goods And City Governance” is organized by LabGov in collaboration with Fordham University of New York and the International Center on Democracy and Democratization (ICEDD) of the LUISS University of Rome. It will take place in Bologna on 6-7 November 2015.
The conference will be co-chared by the LabGov’s coordinator Prof. Christian Iaione (UniMarconi University and LUISS Guido Carli) and by Prof. Sheila Foster (Fordham University) pioneer scholar in conceiving the urban commons.
Many scholars, researchers, policymakers, practitioners and social innovators will take stock of the developments in the interdisciplinary study of the urban commons. The International Scientific Review Committee is composed by leading scholar in the field of urban commons such as Tine De Moor (Utrecht University), Insa Theesfeld (Martin-Luther-Universität), Richard Burdett (London School of Economics), Paola Cannavò (Università della Calabria), Christian Borch (Copenhagen Business School), Leonardo Morlino (LUISS Guido Carli) and Ivana Pais (Università Cattolica del Sacro Cuore).
Keynotes speech will be Tine De Moor (Utrecht University), Richard Sennett (London School of Economics, New York University), Silke Helfrich and Michel Bauwens both from Commons Strategies Group.
The conference will intend to equip participants with inspirational examples of urban development, as well as provide an understanding of the conditions for implementation and the context, measurement and assessment of that impact for the commons. The conference will introduce you into the ongoing study of the commons, stressing the importance of an “urban commons narrative” for urban infrastructure, urban welfare and urban development. Our goal is to bridge together bright minds that are city-focused to foster learning, inspiration and wonder – and provoke innovation.
The conference will seek to better understand the idea of urban commons at different scales, under what circumstances and contexts urban commons emerge, what contributes to their durability and effectiveness, and what undermines them. The conference will highlight six thematic questions, to which a paper submission is required, they are:
- Conceinving the urban commons
- Mapping the urban commons
- The urban commons and democratic innovation
- The collaborative/sharing economy as the basis as a commons-based urban economy
- Social innovation as the basis for a commons-based urban welfare
- Designing and governing the city as a commons
In order to participate abstracts may be submitted to urbancommons@labgov.it or through the dedicated application form on the website. The deadline for submission is August 10th, 2015 at 12:00 AM CET.

If it is true that a revolutionary co-cities’ movement is growing up day by day in Italy, it is even more than true that at European level the discussion is going ahead at the same serious level. And, who is familiar with the EU institution’s offices, is admiring to and staring at what is happening in the first Italian collaborative city, that is Bologna, followed by other beautiful local examples such as Mantova, Battipaglia and Palermo.
Why I am sure about this?
Because professor Iaione, who coordinates LabGov, will travel another time around Europe (two months ago he took part in another ECF’s event, in the Netherlands) to discuss with European activists, policy makers, researchers and scholars about Urban Commons, a theme theorized in 2011 by professor Sheila Foster who will coordinate 2015/2016 LabGov’s edition with professor Iaione.
Actually, during the past months they have constantly shared their ideas, compared their projects and finally they wrote a four handed paper entitled “The city as a Commons”.
In particular, professor Iaione will be part of the panel of experts during the event “Radical Democracy – a Media Showcase”, co-hosted by Julie Ward (S&D Member of the European Parliament) and the European Parliament Intergroup on Public Services and Common Goods, in cooperation with the Doc Next Network and the European Cultural Foundation.
Sophie Bloemen (Commons Network) and Carlos Delclòs will enrich the event, together with professor Iaione and Julie Ward, which will take place in the room “Altiero Spinelli” A3H-1 at the European Parliament, in Brussels. The event will be moderated by Peter Matjasic (OSIFE).
It will be also an innovative event during which, after an introduction, some videos about Commons in European cities will be shown, followed by brief reactions from the discussants and a debate.
Why it is worthy to organize such events?And how this was possible?
Because, as the European Cultural Foundation states, “on the occasion of the European elections in May 2014, the Radical Democracy project invited media makers, social activists and critical thinkers to submit audiovisual media works about the Europe they would like to live in. The 250 videos submitted expressed a profound, widespread desire to remake democracy from the bottom up by claiming public spaces, occupying buildings, renovating neglected parks and reshaping them all with a radical democratic spirit and principles.
With this showcase and debate, we aim to contribute to the dialogue between Members of the European Parliament, media makers, campaigners, activists and citizens, for improving our democracy through enfranchising citizens to reclaim and improve the urban commons”.
Se è vero che in Italia è nata e si stasviluppando una rete delle città fondate sulla collaborazione, è altrettanto vero che in Europa la discussione procede a vele spiegate, con la recente formazione di un intergruppo Europarlamentare sui Commons che inevitabilmente guarda all’Italia come un esempio da seguire.
Se ne parlerà oggi, 16 giugno, a Bruxelles, nell’aula A3H-1 del Parlamento Europeo, durante l’evento “Radical Democracy – a Media Showcase”, cui partecipaerà il professor Christian Iaione, coordinatore di Labgov, assieme a Julie Ward, Sophie Bloemen, Carlos Delclòs e Peter Matjasic.
