The experience of citizens for the redevelopment of a space in the city.
Pisa, Via Montelungo, where once stood the Tuscan paint factory, was a space left to total social decay. Citizens have put a stop to all this, so is born the experience of the town hall of commons. One way to back to living this space, enriching activities and people. A powerful stance by citizens, but on 26th October they saw putting a stop to their initiatives. The eviction and confiscation of the area established following a judgment. But all this has not stopped the citizens of the town hall of commons, that a few days after the eviction has presented their project for the use of space. This project as opposed to those previously presented does not require changes in zoning because it respects the original destination of the space enhancing also its social function. So the people have not surrendered and will continue to fight for the redevelopment of this space going down in the square, event planned for November 16th.

Rosarno, in Calabria, has been protagonist of a collective action by citizens. During the Festival of Urban Regeneration organized by the “A di Città”, in its second edition, a group of about fifty people formed by architects, students, artists, activists decides to join with population to sow the change. The chosen area to start changing it is a place particularly degraded in the city. Meaningful is the use of the stairs, in this process, as an element of connection between the different parts of the neighborhood. Hence was born the idea of creating a “Park of stairs” characterized by art installations and street art, together with décor projects and urban design designed and self-built by the boys of “work in progress” coordinated by three groups (Collectif Etc in Strasbourg, DettoFatto Lab of Agrigento, Studio SuperFluo in Rome) and the scenography prepared with neighborhood kids by two companies of theater and dance (Senza Confini di Pelle and Compagnia Teatro Rendina).

Masciari Theater was founded in 1925 in Catanzaro, capital of Calabria. Restored in 1991, it resumed his activities, not only play, but also cinematographic. Structure in Art-Nouveau style with two entrances, one of which on the main street of the city, dominating its center. This good is now in danger, a danger of abandonment, neglect, cleavage. To save it the citizens of Catanzaro came together, first in a meeting, that has now been established as a real Citizen Committee, called the “Save Masciari Theater”. Committee’s goal was to first create aggregation, involving as many citizens as possible in their own cause. The collection of over 11,000 signatures is a proof of that. They want to recover a monument so important to their community and to return it to domain of all. So the administration has welcomed groan of complaint of citizens. The Catanzaro’s mayor Sergio Abramo in a meeting with the Minister of Culture Massimo Bray has exposed the problems related to acquisition and recovery of the theater, since currently belonging to Masciari’s heirs. The committee “Save the theater Masciari” continues its activities by consensus sensitizing the rest of the community to this issue. The committee “Save Masciari Theater” continues its activities to obtain consensus with a strong organization and mobilization, trying to raise the rest of the community to this problem.

In north of Italy, exactly in Bologna, the Caab (The Agriculture and Food Centre of Bologna) is arranging a new project, called “Progetto 100 x 100” (Project 100 for 100). The Caab is a modern structure designed to promote the wholesale food products and related logistics services. The initiative provides for the granting of pieces of land to some young people and families. Such land is vegetable garden, composed of hundred square meters ground. The Caab will grant 100 pieces of land and so we can understand the name of the project’s meaning. The initiative’s innovation is very particular, because the Caab doesn’t merely grant the gardens, but it goes beyond. In fact, the organization will give concrete tools for the care of gardens. Every family can grow their own vegetable garden and later sell the fruits at the market or exchange them with their neighbors. With this system, participants will learn how to take care of an asset and therefore they will receive real economic advantages from their work.
