From 4 to 7 September 2025, the fourth edition of the Cous Cous Unplugged festival took place in the parking area of the P. Neruda School Complex (Via di Casal del Marmo 216, 00135 Rome).
The initiative, promoted by Roma Capitale – Department of Culture, was awarded under the Call “Roma Creativa 365. Culture All Year Round”, in collaboration with Zètema Progetto Cultura and with the support of the Charlemagne Foundation.
Marco Della Porta (President of Municipality XIV) illustrated the role of the municipal administration in culture-based urban regeneration projects, aimed at transforming urban areas into a large public agora. The neighborhoods of Ottavia and Palmarola, indeed, have never had such a space, having developed spontaneously and without prior urban planning.
Davide Dose (Cous Cous Unplugged) highlighted the energy and positive outcomes achieved by the festival over the years, which has fostered new connections and brought renewed vitality to the local community.
Tullia Valeria Di Giacomo (Researcher in Urban Planning at Sapienza University of Rome) presented the depaving and micro-forestation project implemented at the Pablo Neruda School, where approximately 100 square meters of pavement were removed to create two large flowerbeds, designed to accommodate around 200 specimens of native plant species.
Adriano Contardi (PhD candidate in Law and Business at Luiss Guido Carli University) described the activities undertaken within the Neighborhood Laboratories, as part of Roma Capitale’s Integrated Urban Plan at Santa Maria della Pietà.

On January 23, 2025, researchers from LUISS Guido Carli University and Labgov ETS (Dr. Allegra Eusebio and Rubina Michela Galeotti, as well as Dr. Mario Manna, Antonio Persico and Flavio Petrocelli) met with students from the Domizia Lucilla Institute to promote the co-design of an innovative bioeconomy laboratory in the Santa Maria della Pietà Complex (SMdP). The initiative is part of the Integrated Urban Plan (UI), funded with resources from the PNRR, to redevelop the SMdP area. The initiative aims to promote awareness of the area’s potential value and stimulate innovative and sustainable ideas for value creation, while respecting its strong healthcare vocation.
The event was held at the institute’s main hall (a short distance from the SMdP), and dozens of students from the agricultural and hospitality departments participated.
As per methodological protocol, institutional greetings and speeches occurred at about 10:00 am. Headmistress Ada Maurizio welcomed the guests, urging active participation in co-design. This was followed by the intervention of Dr. Massimiliano Baldini, representing the Urban Planning Department of Roma Capitale, who explained the characteristics and opportunities of the plan for the regeneration of the SMDP. The subsequent speech by Dr. Claudia Salerno, councillor for educational and school policies of the XIV Municipality, highlighted the importance of students’ involvement in the co-design activity in order to develop creative, innovative and shared solutions.
The co-design activity then began, and students split into four groups, which chose expressive names: “the Avengers of Santa Maria della Pietà,” “Generation Z,” “Mind,” and “the Visionaries.” Each group’s work was coordinated by at least one researcher who stimulated the students’ brainstorming activity. The discussion was fruitful, and ideas and proposals revolved around food, culture, health, and sports. The groups were provided with post-it notes, markers, and an A2 sheet bearing a map of the SMDP and neighbouring areas, with the opportunity to represent graphically ideas related to possible uses of the SMDP.
The group work yielded multiple proposals, often fulfilling at least two of the needs related to the above dimensions. Among the many, we can mention the idea of organising cooking workshops under the banner of interculturality, meeting and listening groups for people with special needs, the creation of a garden for growing herbs and spices, the removal of architectural barriers, and the creation of spaces for sociability and conviviality, including for the enjoyment of cultural and sports events. All this emerged in the final phase of the return of the proposals, which took place in the presence of Dr. Baldini, Dr. Salerno and the Institute’s teachers, in which each group, introduced by the reference researcher, represented by at least one student volunteer, exhibited the proposals developed, which, in summary, enhance the multifunctionality of the complex, promoting sociality, inclusion, psycho-physical well-being and sustainability.

On March 17, 2025, Santa Maria della Pietà (SMdP) opened its doors to students from IIS Domizia Lucilla and LUISS-LabGov researchers as part of the Neighborhood Laboratories Project under the Urban Integrated Plan (PUI), funded by the PNRR, aimed at redeveloping the SMdP Complex. Representing LUISS-LabGov were Drs. Allegra Eusebio, Rubina Michela Galeotti, Marijana Krstic, and Stella Scocco, as well as Drs. Adriano Contardi, Mario Manna, Antonio Persico, and Flavio Petrocelli, who promoted the co-design activities of an innovative laboratory aimed at enhancing the historical and agricultural heritage of SMdP. Contributions included testimonies from representatives of the Cobragor cooperative and the association Ortisti Storici Cura Valle Fontana, as well as Dr. Alvisi from ASL Roma 1. Students from the institute participated actively as potential users of the Complex.
The event began around 10:00 am in Sala Basaglia, attended by students from three different classes of the institute, representing agricultural and hospitality studies.
Dr. Manna opened the event, briefly greeting participants on behalf of LUISS-LabGov and thanking the speakers. Subsequently, the school’s principal, Dr. Ada Maurizio, emphasized the educational value of the project, highlighting the area’s need for redevelopment due to existing socio-economic difficulties. She expressed appreciation for both the institute’s involvement and the symbolic value of the hall hosting the event.
Next, Dr. Baldini from the Department of Urban Planning of Roma Capitale recalled with satisfaction the earlier meeting held at IIS Domizia Lucilla on January 23, 2025, which produced original and interesting proposals. Dr. Baldini emphasized that Rome is Europe’s largest agricultural municipality, presenting significant opportunities for local agro-food production and consumption. He introduced the agricultural potential of Rome, particularly focusing on the SMdP area, which is set to host Europe’s largest urban garden.
Dr. Sabri, Vice President of the XIV Municipality, introduced an anecdote from Rome’s Etruscan era, emphasizing land as a common mother, providing sustenance yet requiring care. This care of the land, he stated, enhances well-being through the efforts and experiences involved in cultivating high-quality products.
Following institutional greetings, Dr. Eusebio outlined the day’s agenda and objectives, urging students to carefully consider testimonies about preserving the memory of agricultural heritage, seeking a balanced approach between urban and agricultural development in a complex city like Rome.
Subsequently, a joint presentation was delivered by Michele Mansi from Ortisti Storici and Emanuele Manta from Cobragor, which included historical and contemporary photographs of the SMdP area and Casal del Marmo. This presentation focused on the historical evolution of SMdP’s agricultural system from the Etruscan period to the present, emphasizing its agricultural and health-oriented legacy. It was highlighted that the adjacent area of Valle Fontana has recently become Europe’s largest urban gardening area, thanks to recent interventions by the Metropolitan City.
Following this presentation, a preliminary discussion and reflection involving researchers and students, divided into four groups, took place shortly after 11:00 am.
Around 11:30 am, a guided outdoor tour led by Dr. Alvisi showcased rehabilitative gardening and horticulture activities performed by users of the complex.
After the guided tour, researchers and students returned to Sala Basaglia for a concluding brainstorming session to formulate project proposals. Students were again divided into four groups, each appointing a spokesperson. The feedback phase yielded interesting proposals aimed at regenerating the SMdP complex through enhancing its historical and agricultural heritage: establishing partnerships with nearby schools for developing organic crops, creating seasonal urban gardens, setting up a center within a pavilion for processing products, organizing public courses on product processing for diverse age groups and individuals with disabilities, and promoting on-site agricultural practices through social media.
The event concluded on schedule (1:00 pm) with a group photo of researchers and students.
